Saudi Arabia

  • Oil driven economy
  • No personal income or sales tax

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia rises from the desert as one of the wealthiest nations in the region, thanks to its vast oil resources.

Roughly 75% of budget revenues and 90% of export earnings come from the oil industry. It is the world’s leading petroleum exporter. In order to promote growth outside oil industries, the government has gone about privatising industries such as power and telecommunications.

By 2020 Saudi Arabia will have launched six economic cities. The plan for these new industrialised cities is to diversify the economy in Saudi Arabia and contribute USD$150 billion to the GDP.

A zakat or income tax (a religious wealth tax) is assessed on the taxable income of most business organisations, but again as in most Middle Eastern countries there is no tax on salaries, which makes it an attractive destination for foreign expats to live and work.

Saudi Arabia has many tourist areas, as well as being home to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest places in Islam.

The climate in the region can be characterised in two words: hot and dry. Although lots of clothing is unnecessary in this hot climate, there are plenty of designer labels on offer which are especially attractive with the absence of sales tax in most countries!
