Jersey
The Bailiwick of Jersey is a British Crown dependency off the coast of Normandy, France. Together with the bailiwick of Guernsey it forms the grouping known as the Channel Islands. However, Jersey is part of neither the UK nor the European Union; rather, like the Isle of Man, it is a separate possession of the Crown. Jersey belongs to the Common Travel Area.
- Personal Income Tax rate at a flat 20%
- Strong Financial Services industry
The Economy
Thanks to specialisation in a few high return sectors, Jersey has very high economic output per capita, substantially ahead of all of the world's large developed economies. Jersey's economy is based on financial services, tourism, electronic commerce and agriculture. Financial services contribute approximately 60% of the island's economy and the island is recognised as one of the leading offshore financial centres.
Finance provides 60% of the island’s GDP based on the latest revision of figures and some 60% of Government tax income. The finance industry is attracted to Jersey by the island's stable government, their proximity to both the UK and continental Europe, the significant body of expertise developed by the industry in a wide range of financial services and a competitive tax environment. Jersey is an international finance centre with 51 banks, over 30,000 registered companies and more than £150 billion deposited in the Island at any one time - 60% in foreign currency. The Island also has a flourishing Fund Management sector with over £100 billion under management and a world renowned expertise in Trusts with nearly 200 Trust Companies, all regulated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission, established in the Island.
Immigration
For immigration and nationality purposes, the United Kingdom generally treats Jersey as though it were part of the UK. Jersey is constitutionally entitled to restrict immigration by non-Jersey residents, but control of immigration at the point of entry cannot, at present, be introduced for British, certain Commonwealth and EEA nationals without change to existing international law. Jersey maintains its own immigration and border controls. Although Jersey citizens are full British citizens, an endorsement restricting the right of establishment in European Union states other than the UK is placed in the Jersey passport of British citizens connected solely with the Channel Islands and Isle of Man.
